The history of Dom Jana Długosza
Dom Jana Długosza was founded in 1476 by historian and Sandomierz canon Jan Długosz for the mansionary priests who served the cathedral. The cathedral was the intended destination for the priests for whom the house was built.
The two-storey brick building has high gables and a pitched roof. Above the south entrance, a stone foundation plaque bears the Wieniawa coat of arms, an inscription and the date 1476. It offers a clear detail to look for on the exterior before going inside.
The Diocesan Museum has been housed in the building since 1937. Its exhibition was designed by Karol Estreicher, an art historian from Kraków.
What does the Diocesan Museum display?

The Diocesan Museum’s collections cover religious art and objects from several fields. You’ll find painting, religious sculpture, textiles, small-scale sculpture, architectural decoration, decorative arts, ceramics, furniture, numismatics and archaeology.
The paintings span the 15th to 20th centuries. Among the named works are an approximately 1440 painting of Saints Martha, Agnes and Clare; Lucas Cranach’s Madonna and Child with Saint Catherine, dated 1518–1520; and Sacra Conversazione, dated 1492.
That range gives the collection more than one focus: paintings sit alongside sculpture, furnishings and objects connected with religious and decorative arts.
